December 13th, 2008. That’s the day I had to put my money where my mouth is. I had been talking DG’s ear off bout how I could rap. “Nah nigga, I can spit man.” Hilarious. I remember we were out one night and I was faded, tryna freestyle at the club. My bars were weak though (but don’t get it twisted, I blame that on the drank).
Context: I had met DG two years prior during a summer internship on Wall St. He was my assigned mentor. He looked out for me and trained me to get the job, so developed a big brother-little brother rapport over the years.
Anyway, back to December 13th. I kept talking about how I was wanted to be a rapper, but I had no tracks recorded. Back at Duke, I was strictly on that freestyle shyt, whether it was cypherin or battling. I also did spoken word etc, but never gave much thought to recording artistry. So a friend from work put me on this cat named Zay out in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn who had a studio at his spot. I went in to work with him, and recorded some bars I wrote to the instrumental for Craig Mack’s “Flavor in Ya Ear”. I called that shyt “Flava in ya Eye” (creative genius from jump).
After I wrapped up the studio session, I sent that mp3 to DG and just waited. I’m not gonna lie, all that confident talk went out the window while I was waiting for him to hit me back. In the back of my mind, I’m thinking if he fux with me talent-wise, he might kick a little start-up cash on my out of Wall St. Eventually, he hit me back and we spoke in person. He asked me if I was serious about this shyt, to which I replied “yes”. His response was “let’s do this.” And that’s how AMG started.
To his credit, 9 out of 10 people would have passed on me at that moment. The recording was raw as hell, no signs of being able to make songs. Just some rappity rap bars. My delivery wasn’t even on point. But DG saw some shyt I couldn’t see. We worked together non-stop from that day. I would write after work and record on weekends. I’d sit Sunday night watchin Entourage takin notes on the music. He A&R’d and developed me into the artist I am today.
That following June, I left Wall St to focus on the music. It’s a luxury that I’m forever thankful for, because I was able to develop so much over a span of 2 years. I’m thankful he took a bet on me. I’m so fckin proud of the music, I’m proud of the videos we have comin out. Shyt, I’m proud of this site. I’m proud of us.
This is AMG.
